Selector Dub Narcotic - the stage name of Calvin Johnson - is swinging through town later this week, and it's for a good cause, too! The Ice Cream Social Justice Party goes down on Thursday with American Slim, and more, at recordBar. This show is a rare all-ages event, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting a local women & children's charity.
Calvin Johnson has been on the forefront of the indie scene since the 80's, being a part of many projects including: Olympia trio Beat Happening, Dub Narcotic Sound System, K Records (which put out the likes of early Modest Mouse, among others), and way more.
We caught up with Johnson for a brief interview ahead of his stop in KC. Check it out below and head to the party on Thursday!
Best show you’ve played in KC or LFK? And who was it with?
In the 'mid-'90s I played a couple shows with Dub Narcotic Sound System that were a lot of fun. Folks be dancing, swinging from the rafters.
What character from a TV show or movie do you relate to most. Why?
Marlo Thomas as Anne Marie in the '60s situation comedy That Girl. She's a cheerful problem solver.
Weirdest experience you’ve had on the road?
We went swimming before the show at a local lake and a leach attached itself between my toes. I was trailing blood all over town.
What’s your guilty pleasure album?
Johnny Mathis' Open Fire, Two Guitars (Columbia)
You’re booking a music festival. Who’s playing and where is it located?
Huh? I am? What a nightmare. Please don't make me!
Any pre-show rituals?
I attempt to remember all the song words, in their proper order.
If you were to write a horror movie, what would the premise be?
Republicans take over the Presidency and both houses of Congress.
